Great article. One of the best Chief of Staff hires was Reagan’s hiring of James Baker. He was not Reagan-loyalist, but a competent operator, and had a lot of influence on domestic policy in Reagan’s first term. I really enjoyed Peter Baker and Susan Glasser’s “The Man Who Ran Washington: The Life and Times of James Baker. (And Baker is a Houston native!)
